Why Lowlands House exists
After moving from The Hague to the United States in 2019, we quickly learned there were a few things about home that were surprisingly hard to replace. Being able to walk or cycle almost anywhere was one. The other was food — not restaurant food, but the ordinary things you grow up with and rarely think about until they’re gone.
Pantry staples. A specific brand of chocolate. Cookies with coffee. Soup for lunch. The breakfast you never questioned as a kid. Small things, but they carry real memories — and they’re easy to underestimate until you’re standing in an American grocery aisle looking for them.
We found some of it in suitcases: favorites brought over by family, or tucked into the empty luggage we packed for a trip back to Europe. Those small rituals made the foods feel even more meaningful. Lowlands House began with a simple thought: it should be easier to keep familiar European favorites close.

Lowlands House sits somewhere between the place we came from and the place our family now calls home.
Tomas and Ilana were both born in Alkmaar, in the Netherlands, and lived in The Hague for seven years before moving to the United States in 2019. Today, we’re a family of four in Georgia. Our two children were born here and are both Dutch and American — which makes Lowlands House feel especially fitting: a business shaped by where we came from, where we live now, and the connection between the two.

Every order is fulfilled from our operation in Alpharetta, Georgia. Local customers can choose pickup, and eligible customers nationwide can have their order shipped to their door.

Growing with the people who brought Europe here
We’re looking to meet Dutch people across the United States who have carried their food culture with them — importers, makers, shop owners, community builders, and people with a deep knowledge of the products others miss. We want to learn from them and explore thoughtful ways to partner, so more people can discover the food traditions they represent.
In time, we hope to build those relationships across other European communities too. The best assortment should be shaped not only by what looks interesting on a shelf, but by the people who know why it matters.
